Model railway second class carriage, British Military Train, Berlin, 1983
HO scale model manufactured by Marklin, Germany, 1983.
The coach is painted in green livery.
A related name plate is inscribed, 'The Model of the British Military Train was constructed by Corporal I A L Keatley RCT and officially unveiled by Brigadier A F R Evans MBE Deputy Director General of Transport and Movement and Inspector Royal Corps of Transport 24 March 1983'.
The Berliner was a British military train running daily between West Germany and the British Sector of West Berlin. Once the train crossed into East Germany, the doors were locked. The service on board was rather lavish, complete with formal dining.
The Berlin Brigade HQ was disbanded on 1 January 1991. On 7 February 1991, the Berliner ran for the last time. It was an icon of the Cold War, but with the conflict over, Germany reunified, and greater air and car travel, it passed into history.
