Letter from Captain William Maynard Gomm, 9th Regiment of Foot, to his sister Sophia, 9 July 1808
Writing from aboard a transport vessel off Cork, Gomm reports that his unit is to set sail for the Peninsula. They were part of a British force of around 14,000 men commanded by Sir Arthur Wellesley that landed at Mondego Bay, about 100 miles north of Lisbon, during the first week of August 1808.
From the papers of Field Marshal Sir William Maynard Gomm, 1770-1865.
