Letter from Captain William Maynard Gomm, 9th Regiment, to his sister Sophia, 28 July 1808
Written at anchor in Mondego Bay, Portugal, Gomm is in a confident mood regarding the British expedition's prospects. A British force of around 14,000 men commanded by Sir Arthur Wellesley landed at Mondego Bay, about 100 miles north of Lisbon, during the first week of August 1808.
From the papers of Field Marshal Sir William Maynard Gomm, 1770-1865.
