Band of the 1st Battalion Royal Munster Fusiliers, Tavistock, 1921
Photographic postcard, unknown publisher, 1921. Captioned 'Presentation of Colours', 'Tavistock 1921'.
Presentation of Colours to the 1st Battalion Royal Munster Fusiliers by Edward, Prince of Wales (the future King Edward VIII) at Tavistock in 1921.
British foot regiments had a King's/Queen's Colour and a Regimental Colour. The first was a reminder to all ranks of their loyalty and duty to their sovereign. The Regimental Colour symbolised the traditions and honour of their unit. When a battalion was presented with new colours the old stand were normally laid up in a church or chapel associated with the regiment.
One of seven photograph postcards collected by Company Sergeant Major Charles Henry Spires, 1st Battalion, Royal Munster Fusiliers.
