'43rd Regiment of foot', 1742 (c)

The regiment was raised in 1741 by Colonel Thomas Fowke and served in the garrison on the island of Menorca. In 1747 the regiment was numbered the 54th Regiment of Foot, and then renumbered the 43rd Regiment of Foot in 1747. The regiment served in North America during the French and Indian Wars (1744-1755), the Seven Years War (1756-1763) and the American War of Independence (1775-1783). The 43rd became the 43rd (Monmouthshire) Regiment of Foot in 1782.
