Soldiers of the 1st Battalion, The Royal Irish Regiment, dig 'bear pits' or fox holes, 21 March 2003

The holes were dug by the side of the road during the battalion's journey north into Iraq to provide some measure of protection against possible Iraqi artillery strikes.
