The shadow of a bomb disposal officer falls on a hidden store of mortar, Iraq, March 2003

Digital photograph taken by Warrant Officer 2nd Class Giles Penfound, Army Media Operations, Operation TELIC, 22 March 2003.

The Ammunition Technical Officer (ATO), serving with 21 Field Squadron 33 Engineer Regiment EOD (Explosive Ordnance Disposal) was killed carrying out further duties a few days after this picture was taken.

This trench formed part of a larger network of Iraqi defences around one of the southern oil plants, which the American marines fought through on the first night of the coalition invasion.
