Captured SS Panzer Grenadiers, shortly before being handed over to the Military Police, Arnhem, 18 September 1944

Photograph by Sergeant D M Smith, Army Film and Photographic Unit, World War Two, North West Europe, 1944.

The Airborne troops at Arnhem found themselves confronted by elements of the 9th and 10th SS Panzer Divisions that were refitting in the area. Allied intelligence had failed to confirm their presence prior to the launch of Operation Market Garden. The three guards in the background are glider pilots.

From a collection of 75 British official photographs relating to 1st Airborne Division at Arnhem.
