.577 inch Enfield rifle musket cartridge, 1853 (c)
Cartridges were paper tubes containing gunpowder and a greased ball. Soldiers bit the top off, poured the powder down the barrel then rammed the ball down.
Cartidges like this were used with the Enflied Rifle Musket, which was used by British Empire troops from 1853 to 1867. It was used by the British Army during the Crimean War (1854-1856) and the Indian Mutiny (1857-1859).
