Silver Patriotic Fund medal commemorating the alliance between England and France 1854, awarded by the Mayor of Dover, January 1855
Designed by Punch. Manufactured by Allen and Moore, Birmingham, England.
Although the Crimean War (1854-1856) alliance between Britain, France and Ottoman Turkey had come about unexpectedly, it was nevertheless hailed with enthusiasm and commemorative items such as this medal were produced. It depicts a British Grenadier (left) and a French infantryman (right) standing in front of crossed flags, a cannon and a drum on grassy ground.
