German steel helmet or 'Stahlhelm', 1916 (c)
The famous German pickelhaube spiked helmet of 1914 offered little protection to the soldier's head. In 1916 it was replaced by the Stahlhelm, the most effective World War One steel helmet. The Stahlhelm was worn by German troops through to the end of World War Two (1939-1945).
