Troops searching a Jewish immigrant boat and the refugees disembarking, Haifa, 1948 (c)
Photograph, Palestine (1945-1948), 1948 (c).
Members of 317 Airborne Field Security Section, part of 6th Airborne Division, search a refugee vessel. Despite the pressure of world opinion, in particular the repeated requests of US President Harry Truman, the British refused to lift their ban on immigration and admit more Jews to Palestine.
From an album of 149 photographs and postcards compiled by Sgt Herbert Bartley Hiscock during service with the Intelligence Corps and 6th Airborne Division in Palestine, chiefly Haifa, 1947-1948.
