Jug commemorating the Battle of Salamanca, 22 July 1812
White with blue transfer printed design, barrel shape, 1814 (c).
This jug has an image of the Earl of Wellington on one side, and Lieutenant-General Sir Stapleton Cotton (who was made Lord Combermere in 1814) on the other. Cotton led the British cavalry at Salamanca during the Peninsular War (1808-1814). He was wounded after the battle when he was accidentally shot by a sentry.
