Jug commemorating General James Wolfe and the Marquess of Granby, 1771 (c)
Creamware, transfer-printed, made by Wedgwood, 1771 (c). One side has a vignette of the death of James Wolfe at Quebec, after Benjamin West's oil painting; on the other side a vignette of the Marquess of Granby, after the painting by Edward Penny (1714-1791) (NAM. 1963-07-31-1).
Popular military heroes made good subjects for commemorative ceramics. Although there is no special connection between Wolfe and Granby, the manufacturer has decided to increase the appeal of his jug by including both heroes.
