A Mortar Platoon team fire 81mm mortar rounds during a fire support mission. The platoon consists of four sections of two L16 81mm mortars. This weapon is capable of firing high explosive, smoke and illuminating rounds to a maximum range of 6,170 yards (5,650 metres).
