Inter Camp Olympics, 1952
This programme is from the 1952 'Inter Camp Olympics' at Pyuktong Camp in the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK). The event included British and Allied prisoners-of-war (POWs) from camps across DPRK and involved sports like boxing, basketball, track-and-field and football.
Although these 'Olympics' were staged to help win over the prisoners to the Communist cause, many Allied soldiers took part in order to relieve the boredom of captivity or to obtain better food. A cynical propaganda exercise, the games failed to win many converts or convince the outside world that the North Koreans and Chinese treated their POWs well.
