Photograph by Sergeant Jimmy H Mapham of the British Army Film and Photographic Unit, World War Two, North West Europe (1944-1945), 1944.
This iconic photograph was voted the finest taken during the war by the American press. Mapham was a staff photographer on the 'Leicester Mercury' before the war. The British Army Film and Photographic Unit consisted of volunteer soldiers from a variety of units.
