'Everything Goes by Air in Burma', 1944 (c)

Official photograph, World War Two, Far East, 1944 (c).

Most of the roads in Burma were rough and little better than farm tracks, and wound through the jungle and over the mountains in long roundabout routes. For four months of the year they were made impassable by the monsoon. The answer to the Fourteenth Army's logistical problems was the Royal Air Force Transport Command which dropped supplies to isolated units. In this image Indian soldiers pack tins of condensed milk into containers for a forthcoming drop.
