'Surrender', 1943
Photograph, World War Two, Eastern Front (1941-1945), 1943.
Red Army soldiers, wrapped up well against the biting Russian winter, cover four surrendering Germans as they approach hands-aloft towards their trench. Three are armed with rifles, while the third carries a PPsh-41 submachine gun. The Red Army captured over three million German prisoners during the titanic struggle on the Eastern Front. Of these 374,000 died in captivity.
