'Advice on Demobilisation', leaflet, 1919 (c)
Information leaflet, Form V.18, Local Government Board, London, 1919 (c).
Leaflet offering advice on demobilisation, specifically relating to venereal disease, including a list of clinics 'for Men' in the United Kingdom, 1919 (c).
The increasing spread of venereal disease among civilians and troops during World War One (1914-1918) led the authorities to take action to combat what was seen as a significant drain on military and national efficiency. This leaflet, published in 1919, was designed to address the problem of infected service personnel returning home during the large scale demobilisation after the war ended.
The leaflet states 'During demobilisation, and on the way to your home, you may be exposed more than usually to temptations which may lead to sexual intercourse with strangers'. It advises that, 'On no account should you marry until you are cured'.
From a collection of service papers and leaflets relating to the service of Edmund Richard Dix, 2/1st East Riding Yeomanry, 1914-1919.
