One soldier is the spotter and is carrying a haversack and using binoculars, the other is a sniper and is about to take aim with his rifle. Both men wear sheepskin jackets. Such garments, along with goatskin and other animal skin coats and jerkins, were nicknamed 'Wooly Bears', 'Teddy Bears', and 'Stinkers'.
