The Chateau at Peronne, 1917 (c)
Photograph, World War One, Western Front, 1917 (c).
Peronne's strategic position, dominating the Somme valley, made it an obvious site for fortification. The medieval towers and ramparts suffered damage in a succession of conflicts. This photograph shows damage to a fortified gateway from German artillery in World War One (1914-1918).
One of 193 British and Allied official photographs.
