The ruins of Peronne, 1917 (c)
Photograph, World War One, Western Front, 1917 (c).
Peronne's strategic position, dominating the Somme valley, led to its troubled history. It suffered severe damage in the Franco-Prussian War (1870-1871), World War One (1914-1918) and in World War Two (1939-1945). This photograph shows damage to the town from German artillery in the First World War.
One of 193 British and Allied official photographs.
