Farmers' market in Wisikoti, Malawi, 2002
Digital photograph by Mark Ballantyne, Royal Logistic Corps. One of 465 images taken from two CDs of multimedia, 2002.
In 2002 students from Tayforth University Officer Training Corps (OTC) worked on irrigation projects in Wisikoti, Ntchisi District, in central Malawi, as part of Exercise NORTHERN HUSKY. With a largely rural population, the majority of the villagers rely on subsistence farming. The main agricultural products of Malawi are maize, sugarcane and potatoes. The town of Wisikoti had a small farmers' market and the aid project aimed to increase production levels of farms to generate income from the sale of any surplus maize.
The University Officer Training Corps offers students the opportunity to see and experience life in the Army but the scheme does not commit a student to joining the Army after graduation.
