Members of the Royal Gurkha Rifles awaiting embarkation for Afghanistan, 2006

Photograph, 2006.

Gurkhas gather at an unknown airstrip while in the background a Royal Air Force (RAF) C-17 Globemaster III transport aircraft can be seen. This aircraft is used for the rapid delivery of troops and cargo to British Army operating bases anywhere in the world, including Helmand province in Afghanistan. The C-17 is perfectly suited for operating on the relatively small airfields surrounded by inhospitable terrain that are a feature of the Afghan theatre.

From a compact disc of multi-media associated with Royal Gurkha Rifles, Helmand, Afghanistan, 2006.
