'D' (Tamandu) Company, 2nd Royal Gurkha Rifles, was deployed in Helmand Province on attachment to 16 Air Assault Brigade in January 2006. Like the rest of their brigade, they were tasked with establishing security to allow reconstruction after the overthrow of the Taleban government, the extension of central political control and the containment of the opium trade. On arrival, 'D' (Tamandu) Company was initially tasked as force protection for the main British base in Afghanistan, Camp Bastion, but it was soon deployed on offensive operations against the Taleban in the Sangin Valley and Now Zad.
