A wrecked locomotive from a hospital train near Gulistan, 31 July 1919
Photograph, 3rd Afghan War (1919).
Gulistan was situated on the border between Afghanistan and British Baluchistan. This area witnessed serious fighting during the 3rd Afghan War (1919). Although the British were able to mount an aggressive defence against the Afghans and eventually captured the border fort of Spin Baldak on 27 May 1919, they struggled to control the local tribesmen who attacked the railway line that went through the Khojak Pass.
From an album of 137 photographs, relating to the 101st Bty Royal Field Artillery in India 1917-1919.
