About 1.3 million men from the Indian sub-continent served during the First World War, many of them on the Western Front.

This memorial to the Indian Army was built on the Sussex Downs near Brighton in 1921. The Chattri marks the place where 53 Sikh and Hindu Indian Army soldiers, who had died in hospitals in Brighton and Hove, were cremated.
