English basket-hilted broadsword, 1610 (c)
This sword has a thick double-edged blade which was designed primarily for chopping. It would have possibly been used up to 1640. Its 'Irish' hilt consists of ribbon like bars and damascened patterns worked in gold. The patterns are of minute scroll work and the pommel is of flattened bulbous form. The grip is bound with silver wire with thicker plaited wire at the top and bottom.
The blade has a wide central fuller and each face a running wolf mark originally of Passau but possibly from Solingen. The remains of a 'man in the moon' mark are evident on the middle of the blade.
