Last note written by Captain Joseph Fenwick, 3rd (The East Kent) Regiment of Foot (The Buffs), in his own blood, November or December 1810
Fenwick was mortally wounded while pursuing a party of enemy grenadiers in the neighbourhood of Evora, near Alcobaca, Portugal, in November or December 1810. He died at Chamusca on 10 December. The note was written to his commanding officer, Colonel Richard Blunt and reads:
'I am shot thro the body and arms for God's sake send me a Surgeon English if possible - if I do not recover God bless you all. J.F.'.
The letter, which is mounted on card and framed, was given to the officers of 1st Battalion 3rd (The East Kent) Regiment of Foot (The Buffs) by Lieutenant-Colonel G E E Blunt, grandson of General Richard Blunt.
So highly was Fenwick thought of that the Duke of Wellington made special mention of him in a report to the Earl of Liverpool, Secretary of State for War, in which he concluded 'we have thus sustained a great loss, and he is lamented by all who had knowledge of his gallantry'.
