'Phoebe Hassel; died at Brighton, 1821, aged 108', 1760 (c)

Engraving, artist unknown, 1830 (c).

Phoebe Hessel joined the 5th Regiment of Foot in the 1700s after disguising herself as a man. She probably enlisted in the Army to follow a soldier she had fallen in love with. She remained undetected as a soldier for 17 years and was wounded at the Battle of Fontenoy in 1745.
