Carved wooden Company school figure of a sepoy of the Madras Army, 1785 (c)
The figure, made by an Indian craftsman and produced around Hyderabad, was probably a toy which is why the weapon is missing and the paint is worn. Figures of this type were used to illustrate the different ethnic groups recruited by the Madras Army. Very few Company school wooden figures have survived from the 18th century.
