'La Belle Alliance', 1815
Sepia watercolour over pencil on paper by Denis Dighton (1792-1827), signed lower centre, 'Denis Dighton del/ MP. to his. RH.PR' [Military Painter to his Royal Highness the Prince Regent], 1815. Number 6 from a series of nine landscape views of the battlefield of Waterloo, painted shortly after the decisive battle.
The 'La Belle Alliance' inn was occupied by the French prior to the battle. It became famous as reputedly the site where the two Allied commanders, the Duke of Wellington and Marshal Blucher, met after the battle.
