Pressure plate devices, 2010 (c)
Digital photograph, Afghanistan (2001- ), 2010 (c).
The front device is recycled from a fruit crate. It is now policy that British soldiers never discard anything they use in theatre, to ensure that it cannot be recycled against them. This is a lesson learned from Iraq, where old batteries from torches were found in later improvised explosive devices (IEDs). All rubbish from Forward Operating Bases is now burned in situ.
From DVD of 34 photographs relating to explosive ordnance disposal work in Afghanistan (2001- ).
