'Bringing in Spies. Kambulas Camp', 1879 (c)
Watercolour over pencil drawing by Captain John Waddy, 1st Battalion 13th (1st Somersethire) (Prince Albert's Light Infantry), 1879 (c).
Shows Zulu spies taken prisoner by the British during the Anglo-Zulu War of 1879 being brought into the British camp at Kambula.
The Zulus developed an effective system for obtaining and communicating military intelligence through a network of spies. This gave them a significant advantage during their conflict with the British in 1879, notably helping them to inflict a defeat on a British column at the Battle of Isandlwana on 22 January that year.
From a collection of ten drawings by Captain John Waddy, 13th (1st Somersetshire) Regiment of Foot (Prince Albert's Light Infantry), Zulu War (1879).
