An IED casualty arrives for treatment at Camp Bastion Hospital, 2009

One of the main threats to soldiers and civilians in Afghanistan came from improvised explosive devices (IEDs). These killed 224 British soldiers and seriously wounded many more.

For the medical staff at Camp Bastion Hospital this meant dealing with major trauma patients with missing limbs, significant and visible tissue loss and substantial internal injuries from explosive blasts.
