'Please knit now', 1945
Lithograph poster designed by Abram Games (1914-1996), printed by J Weiner Limited, 1945.
This poster was designed by Games to encourage women in the forces and at home to knit socks for British soldiers fighting in the Far East campaign. When he was completing this design, Games met his future wife, Marianne Salfeld, whose name is written on a loop of the wool.
Games had been promoted captain in 1942 with the title Official War Poster Artist and during the next four years produced around a hundred posters. Many were striking abstract images, but he always believed that such simple designs had the biggest impact on people.
From a collection of 45 posters from World War Two (1939-1945).
