Kabul Street Scene, Afghanistan, 2012

Oil on ammunition box by Douglas Farthing MBE , 3rd Battalion, Royal Anglian Regiment, 2012.

After leaving the Army Douglas Farthing returned to serve in a Territorial Army unit of the Royal Anglian Regiment. Using the materials close to hand, he painted this work on the lid of an ammunition box. He commented, 'I'm not sure whether it was an artistic response or a financial response, but it was quite a nice thing I was making things from, from what we used as soldiers.'.

Farthing painted the Red Route running alongside the University of Kabul, a 'no go' area in his earlier deployment to Kabul in 2002. Farthing's platoon occupied a school and started to patrol from this point in an attempt to establish security in the area.
