Poster for the film version of 'Oh! What A Lovely War', 1969
This poster shows the actor John Mills, playing Field Marshal Sir Douglas Haig, walking through a field of white crosses. Joan Littlewood's musical 'Oh! What a Lovely War' (1963) and the subsequent film version, directed by Richard Attenborough, reinforced the popular image of World War One (1914-1918) as a 'futile' conflict led by 'incompetent' generals like Haig.
