Replica Improvised Explosive Device (IED) plywood pressure plate switch, 2013
This is an example of a low metal content victim operated IED switch, commonly used by insurgents during the Afghanistan campaign (2001-). The recycled timber switch bends under the weight of a person or vehicle, bringing the metal contacts together and initiating the device. Containing very little metal, it is difficult to detect using standard Vallon metal detectors.
