'The Slacker Must Follow Him Now', 1916 (c)
This 'Daily Sketch' news stand poster shows a soldier holding a child. It was probably issued before the Military Service Act came into effect in March 1916. Men from 18 to 41 years old were now liable to be called up for Army service. Prior to this, the military had relied on voluntary enlistment. This poster was an attempt to shame single and childless 'slackers' into joining up and doing their bit.
