Message capsule from a carrier pigeon, 1916 (c)
Pigeons carried coded messages. They could quickly fly up and out of range and be relied upon when all other communication had failed - 95 per cent of pigeon messages were received. The capsule was retained at the end of World War One (1914-1918) by Private George William Pennicott of the Royal Engineers.
