Formation badge, 15 (United Kingdom) Psychological Operations Group, 2014
Square cloth badge with black stag's head with the unit number in Roman numerals, 'XV' below.
15 (United Kingdom) Psychological Operations Group was a tri-service military unit parented by 1 Military Intelligence Brigade but from April 2014, part of the Security Assistance Group within the British Army's Force Troops Command. Since April 2015, it has been subsumed into 77th Brigade. It is a composite unit of regulars and reserves.
The unit was established in 1991, and deployed soldiers to conduct psychological operations in support of British operations in Bosnia, Kosovo, Sierra Leone, Iraq and Afghanistan.
Its role in Afghanistan as part of Operation HERRICK included mounting operations to persuade Afghans that their futures were best served not with the Taleban but with themselves and their elected government. The unit ran a network of radio stations employing local Afghans as DJs, broadcasting music, poetry, debate programmes, farming advice, and even a soap opera nicknamed 'The Pashto Archers'. They hosted imams providing religious guidance, and presenting the case against waging jihad on civilians.
The unit also produced graphic posters and leaflets for an information campaign in areas where literacy was only around 20 per cent. This included advising on the risk of unexploded ordnance, advice on farming, encouragement to support Afghan security services, and warnings of the power of NATO forces to intimidate local Taleban.
