A soldier using a phone in camp in Afghanistan, 2009
Digital photograph by Rupert Frere, 2009.
Communication with home is an important factor in maintaining the morale of troops on active service. This photograph shows a temporary facility in a base in Afghanistan set up to allow soldiers to contact friends and family by telephone. Technological developments like the satellite phone and the Internet have resulted in the increased opportunities for communication with home but traditional letters, postcards, and parcels remain an important part of maintaining ties with home.
From a collection of multimedia relating to Sergeant Rupert Frere, Royal Logistic Corps, and the Army Photographic Competition in 2015.
