A Soldier from 2nd Battalion The Parachute Regiment, patrols near Char Coucha with his L85 A2 rifle and new magazine, January 2011
Digital photograph by Sergeant Rupert Frere, Royal Logistic Corps, 2011.
This image was one of Frere's award winning portfolio in the Professional Portfolio Category of the Army Photographic Competition in 2011.
In 2011, troops in Afghanistan were issued with new, lightweight see-through magazines for the SA80 rifle, further reducing the weight of their kit. Made from a lightweight plastic, the 30-round Magpul EMAG magazine was around half the weight of a standard metal magazine, yet more robust. A clear window in the magazine allowed troops to easily monitor how much ammunition they had left, helping ensure they had sufficient levels at critical points in battle.
From a collection of 632 digital photographs compiled by Sergeant Rupert Frere, Royal Logistic Corps.
