1st Battalion The Royal Irish Regiment and Royal Engineer elements participating in 'Spearhead Land Element' (SLE) exercise on Salisbury Plain, December 2009. SLE units are on 24-hour notice to provide British military assistance anywhere in the world. The troops' training for this role includes undertaking various testing humanitarian aid, hostage rescue and combat scenarios.
The soldiers are wearing 'Tactical Engagement System' kits comprising of vests and helmets fitted with sensors that record simulated injuries. This system helps create a more realistic training environment for unit medics. The kit is also fitted with a satellite location system that allows commanders to track troop movements.
