Leaflet issued by Irgun Zvai Leumi (National Military Organization in the Land of Israel) warning civilians that they had planted contact mines on main railway lines, Palestine, 1947
The Irgun was one of the main terrorist groups seeking to establish a Jewish homeland. Their most notorious attack was the King David Hotel bombing in Jerusalem (1946) which killed 90 people.
This leaflet was recovered by the 3rd Battalion, Grenadier Guards. It warns locomotive drivers and civilian travellers, 'Hebrews and Arabs', not to travel on trains. The railway lines were regarded as legitimate targets because they were used by the British to transport men and equipment.
