Letter from HRH Edward, Prince of Wales, to Denzil George Fortescue, from Warley Barracks, 13 August 1914
This letter to the Prince's old friend, the 6th Earl Fortescue, discusses Edward's recent commission into 1st Battalion The Grenadier Guards, conditions at Warley Barracks in Brentford, his training regime, and his hopes to embark for Belgium.
The Secretary of State for War, Lord Kitchener, refused to allow the Prince to join his battalion at the front, citing the harm that the capture of the heir to the throne could cause.
