'Bulawayo, Matabeleland. May 95', 1895

Photograph of (back row, L-R) Captain Bulkeley-Johnson, Captain Charles Hyde Villiers, Captain Bernard Rhodes and Charles David Fleming; (front row, L-R) unidentified Matabele man, Tom, Captain Spreckley, Captain Charles (Charlie) White, Captain Robert White and Holden.

Bulkeley-Johnson served in the 2nd Dragoon Guards (Royal Scots Greys), being promoted to Captain a year before this photograph was taken. Villiers was in the Royal Horse Guard and was one of the officers in the Jameson Raid (1895-1896). Fleming served throughout the Matabele Rebellion in 1896.

Spreckley was Commander of 'C' Company Salisbury Horse, part of the Salisbury column in 1893 and served in the Boer War (1899-1902). Charlie White had joined the Royal Fusiliers in 1881, but from 1892 he was Chief Commissioner of Police for the British South Africa Company. Robert White commissioned into the Royal Welsh Regiment and became Chief Staff Officer to his brother, and Commissioner, Henry.

From a collection of 30 photographs relating to Rhodesia in the 1890s and the Matabele War.
