Bulawayo in Matabeleland, South Africa, August 26th 1895

(L-R) Sir John Charles Willoughby, Lady Charlotte Paulet, Lord Henry Paulet, Captain Henry (Harry) Frederick White, Captain Kincaid Smith, Captain Robert (Bobby) White, Lord Annaly (Luke White), Captain Charles (Charlie) White and (front) Captain Charles Hyde Villiers.

Willoughby served with the British South Africa Company's Force in Matabeleland in 1893. He was second in command during the Jameson Raid (1895-1896).

Lord Paulet (1862-1962), 16th Marquess of Winchester, travelled to South Africa in 1891, where be befriended Cecil Rhodes and the pair went on hunting trips together. He married his first wife, Charlotte Paulet (nee Howard), the following year.

Robert White commissioned into the Royal Welsh Regiment and became Chief Staff Officer to his brother, and Commissioner, Henry. Charlie White had joined the Royal Fusiliers in 1881, but from 1892 he was Chief Commissioner of Police for the British South Africa Company. Their elder brother, Luke, was the 3rd Baron Annaly.
